It has been a while since I last updated so here goes the current version of things.
CC--PAID OFF! That was thanks to all the overtime I worked in March, April and May. I still have a balance on the books at one CC but it is interest free and I have the money to pay if off in the savings acoount making a few pennies of interest for the time being.
Vacation---Amazing. I went to Seattle and Alaska for two weeks. I dare say that trip was just as expensive as my Australia trip but I did enjoy it. I had budgeted for the trip so no debt was incurred as a result. I spent freely but responsibly and still came back with a nice chunk of change! I am thinking about another vacation with the leftover.
401K--I upped my contribution another 1%. Might consider upping again when I get my raise in the next month or so but not sure. I might think about opening an IRA or adding to my EF
EF--again thanks to the overtime it is getting up there. Still not where I want it to be but much higher than I have ever had before.
Car--with no CC payments anymore I have increased my payments from 330 to 500+. I could pay more but I am still working on the EF. I think I can pay it off before the end of next year. I think my goal will be to pay if off in 2 years. We'll see.
And now that you have wading through all the other stuff this is where I need help. My trusty Toshiba PC is on its way out. I think it is time to put the old girl out to pasture. SO I am in need of a new Laptop. I have always had a PC but am considering trying a MAC. PCs are cheaper and more familiar. I don't want to go with Vista so my options are limited. Macs are quite a bit more expensive and again I am not familiar with that operating system. I am afraid that if I get a Mac I will have a huge learning curve and get frustrated. (I am leaning towards the 250 gig Macbook $1500)
Any advice????
Thanks

Well, I am in the middle of working some major OT. I working 6 12 nights a week. It preety much sucks for having a social life (not that I had one before) but the positive reinforcement every two weeks is very nice. In fact, with this paycheck I will pay off my visa and saved enough for my Alaska trip!
If all goes according to plan and I work all the OT hours until the end (we are hoping for May 15 ending) I will also be able to pay off my last credit card and put about 1200 into the emergency fund!!! WooHoo

Well, I took the plunge and have started the credit card shuffle. Meaning I got an offer in the mail for a cc with a no interest balance transfer offer for 11 months. I decided to pay off one of my cards. The transfer cost me 75 but I will make up the difference in just one month.
I will be working some major OT in April and May so I will be able to pay off the balance then (or very close to it). Even is something major happens and I cannot pay off the balance before I start to accrue interest the interest rate on this card is much lower.
One question thou--When I do pay off the balance to this new card do I close it or keep it open? If I keep it open and no balance then when I go for a mortgage or other major loan the bank will see I have all this available credit that I could potentially charge up this making me more of a risk, but at the same time won't it improve my debt ratio?

As you can see, I currently carry a balance on my CCs. I am working to pay them off and I do make more than the minimum payment to them. I also continue to use one of them. I use it as a way to puchase something I have the money for but the money may be in ING, or in the next paycheck or so. So in actuality I am only using it for a short time. I pay off the amount as soon as it shows up online so no finance charges are accrued on the ammount. Well, to speed things up with paying the card off I have now decided to pay 10% more to the card than what I charge. Example: If I charge something for $10 I will pay $11 to the card. It is not much in the grand scheme of things but every little bit helps plus it makes me think more seriously about a new purchase because it will cost me 10% more.
You may also be wondering why I still continue to use my cards. Lets face it, most of life today requires having a card and using it. If I cut them up and go cold turkey, will I ever learn to use credit wisely?? I think not.
Anyway, its just one of many small steps to use to get out of debt

I guess I had one of those moments. I pay my car payment online and early. Well, I logged in to the site and did my thing on Thursday evening. On Friday, I checked the site and it didn't show the payment as going through. I thought that maybe I had forgotten to hit the submit button. Instead of waiting a day or two, dince I was paying early, I made another payment making sure to hit the submit button this time.
Well wouldn't you know it I ended up making 2 payments! I had to scamble to transfer money from my EF to my checking acct so nothing would bounce.
Thankfully even though extra money goes to principle it also will show on my acct as not having to make a payment for Feb. so I will just replace my EF money then.
What a goober! But luckily I had the money in the ol' EF to take care of the mistake

Well. first to update about the car--I did get it and I love it! My gas costs have gone down by half and my insurance didn't go up to much. I got a great deal and a good interest rate. Yea for good credit scores!
Now to the makin' money--I make jewelry as a hobby and a bit of a side business if the right opportunity presents itself. Well it presented itself this week at work. I made $41 from one co-worker. Actually most of that was recouping cost and not profit but I do it as a hobby so if I can support my habit I am happy. That money will go towards vacation next weekend.
I was going to use my hotel points on my vacation to Alaska in May but the hotel chain blacks out promo days during the season in Alaska so I went ahead and used them for Orlando next weekend--three days hotel for $0!

Well, it might be time to put the old girl out of her misery. My current car has 120K miles and is 11 years old. I am sure it has a bit more life in it but it is getting to that magic point where without a mechanic on permanent retainer it is just getting too unreliable for my comfort. I do a lot of travelling and I work odd hours at an out of way place.
Anyway, I haven't completely made up my mind but I am leaning in the direction of getting a new car.
One good thing is that I work for a very large corporation which has corporate pricing for autos. SO I am looking at a 2008 Honda Civic EX. The corporate price I qualify for is aobut 3K below retail list. Not bad. Hondas also have a good resale value so when I go to sell or trade it in a few years it will still be worth it. (yes I know I should run it into the ground but this car is not my ideal car and it is for the short term. Yes, I also realize I should buy a used car if I only plan to keep it a short time but I do not want to inherit someone elses problems)

The end of next month I will be taking a mini vacation to Orlando--yes the capital of all things expensive, commercial, and touristy. Actually I used to be part of the touristy part, I worked at SeaWorld. SO I am going to be visting friends and partaking of the most wonderful activity at that other place (you know the one with the mouse--you see at SW Disney was a 6 letter word ) The Food and Wind festival--it is so fun to eat and drink your way around the world! I will also be stopping for a day or so on the way up there to stop in and see my dad who is working temp at another plant.
Anyway, I have been putting aside about $20-40 each paycheck from my spending money plus change and what not so my spending money will be taken care of and I also belong to a frequent stay program with Choice hotels and have enough points to have 2 free hotel nights. I was saving all my points for my vacation to Alaska but these points expire the end of this year so I need to use them or lose them.
So basically the only money I will have to take out of my official vacation fund is money for one night hotel, gas to get to Orlando and the disney ticket. I might be able to swing a free ticket but it is a long shot. I will be going with an annual pass holder so I wont have to pay for parking.
I will be able to make up for the money I will be taking out of the vacation fund in February since I will be working about 30-40 hours of overtime for about 6 weeks then.
I have also started volunteering at the Dolphin Research Center. I have only been there once so far but its nice. It is a bit of a drive (75 miles one way) but it is a nice drive and it feels good to be active around animals again.

In the last week and a half I have spent almost $300 for shoes. I know that is a lot of money but it was not without careful consideration. I have really hard feet to fit so shoes are the one thing I willingly spend money on. If the feet ain't happy I ain't happy. I have to have steel toe shoes for work so that was one pair. I also swear by merrells for hiking/trail shoes and I wear them as my everyday shoes. In fact they fit me so well that just wearing those shoes has lessened my plantar faciatis.
Anyway, I found my favorite style of merrells on shoebuy.com so I got them and then this weekend they had a 20% off sale for labor day so I bought another pair for the discount.
I highly recommend Shoebuy.com. The prices are very competitive and they offer no sales tax or shipping and they will even pay for shipping for returns. Not bad.
So yea, I blew the budget for shoes but I feel like it was a good investment.

I am a bit bummed! Today is my university's big game of the year (rivalry wise) and it is not on TV here and the cable network it is showing on is not offered here. I went to Colorado State University and today they are playing University of Colorado. I won;t be able to see the game and since CSU is not a huge football school, none of the games are likely to be played on a channel I get.
Oh well--yet another reason to move back!

Well I bit the bullet and bought a new aquarium for my fish. She(Fluffy the travelling goldfish) is now the proud owner of a new 20 gallon aquarium. So I figure this free, previous feeder, goldfish has cost me about $300 since I have had her. Didn't someone once say a free pet is never free?! I don't mind at all--for a fish she is pretty interactive and at least it is something living.
Now I have an empty 10gal set up. I haven't decided if I will get more fish, or use the old tank as a backup.

Well, since I am very much into instant gratification (I mean, why else would I have gotten into CC debt in the first place?) I think I am going to change my CC pay off strategy.
I am now going to concentrate on paying of the smallest card. It has a lower interest rate than the large card but I will be able to pay it off much faster and actually feel like I have accomplished something. I am hoping that small victory will rally me for the rest of the job!
I am also going to call direct tv and cancel my HBO subscription. There really isn't much on and I have Starz which seems to be much more usefull. I also want to cancel the horrid little direct tv magazine also--such a waste of money.
Ofcourse I have some spending to do as well in the coming days--I want to get a new aquarium for my goldfish. She is currently in a 10 gallon and I would like to get her a bigger one since she is about 5 inches. It is a pain to clean out the aquarium now so at least with a larger one I won;t have to clean as often and I will have enough room to put some "furniture" in there for her.

I know those words together are sometimes an oxymoron but I really do have a nice credit card story.
I have a WAMU visa card that pays me a 1% bonus on all purchases. Last month I figured my bonus was about due so I didn't run to pay off the card immediately because then I would have a large credit and I didnt want that. As soon as it posted (about mid cycle) I immediately paid off the remainder (about $60). Whe I got my statement in the mail I noted an extra credit to my account of .13c. Turns out that I had accrued that much in interest by waiting for the rebate to post and WAMU just deducted that from my account. I guess they didn't want to deal with a .13c check!

Well, I have had my ceiling fan up for just about a month and I got my power bill today--it only came in about $18 less than last month. (a 9% reduction) I was really hoping for a bigger differnce but I guess $18 is better than nothing. It is also the hottest part of summer so it may be a losing battle regardless of cost cutting measures.
I still enjoy the fan so it was worth the cost even if I dont save money on the power bill

SO I have a change jar that I place all my loose change into every evening. I was going to wait until it was filled until I rolled them and deposited them. But then I realized that I am actually losing interest by waiting. SO I wrapped them tonight and it amounted to $57.00. Not bad for 5 months.

Just wanted to pass this along. I am looking into getting a subscription to Budget Travel Magazine. I have a couple of issues I have bought and have the annoying little subscription cards that come in them. I have been meaning to subscribe but haven't managed to put the card in the mail yet so I went online to subscribe that way. Get this--the card in the Mag offers the subscription for $10/yr the website charges $12/yr--What gives????
Do other mags do that too???

I work at a place that is basically full of unhappy people for various reasons--lack of leadership, old equipment, high cost of living, no work-life balance, etc. Anyway we had an all hands meeting yesterday where the head honchos announced that everyone will be receiving at least a 10% raise effective immediately. Not bad. Actually because of the high cost of living in the area we are now not a far from earning a decent wage for the area.
Immediately I redid my budget to reflect the new numbers. I will be putting some of it towards debt, increasing my monthly savings, adding a small amount to my spending money and a small amount to my gas budget. By increasing my gas budget I will now be able to volunteer at dolphine Research center in the keys--its a 140 mile round trip! I used to train dolphins at another facility and one of my dolphins is down at DRC so I will get to see her and work with her again. It will also help me keep my training skills up to date so if I go back into the field I won't be out of the loop.

I finally got my fan installed this weekend. I have not had the A/C lower than 78 since. I need a cool room to sleep at night and the fan is doing a marvelous job even at 78. Hopefully it will make a large impact on the power bill. The only thing I am a bit worried about is that I have a goldfish (her name is Fluffy) and her water temp has risen a bit since the A/C has been at a higher temp. Now I know goldfish are hardy individuals--God knows she would be dead already if she wasn't--but I dont want to stress her by having her water so warm. Although at almost 5 inches long I am seriously considering getting her a new tank. Right now she is in a 10gal but I don;t have a filter in the aquarium and with the warmer temps come more algae growth and her tank gets dirtier quicker. OK I have babbled enoght about the fish.
My computer has also been having issues getting on the internet. I have called tech support with Bellsouth and they couldn't diagnose the problem. Fortunely my dad has a friend that is a former IT guy and he agreed to look at it. Well, apparently the virus protection and firewall that Bellsouth has as part of their service is useless--Without going into techno speak because I don;t know any of it, basically my computer should have been declared a disaster area by the CDC--Full of viruses and various other bad stuff. I should be getting it back tonight and will once again be able to spend copious amounts of time wasting time on the computer! And the cost???? A bottle of Gin--my kind of tech support!!

I just hate tolls but in some cases I think they are a necessary evil in order to maintain the roads. Anyway, since moving to Florida I have had to suck it up and pay road tolls. Fortunetly I don;t have to travel a toll road every day. The highway department ran a special last week where they offered their sunpass at 50% off. Instead of $25.00 for the transponder it was only $12.50 so I decided to get one. Using the sunpass saves time and about 25% off the regular tolls. Every little bit helps.

Thanks

Today I finally got around to buying a ceiling fan. I have always said that I get positively reinforced for procrastinating and once again that has been proven. I have been putting off buying the fan for several weeks for a number of reasons. Anyway, in the interim I recieved a 10% off coupon from home depot--great I thought, that will save me some money. Still put off buying the fan. When I went today Home Depot happened to be having a sale on fans--20% off. So with both the sale and the coupon I was able to get the fan, and extension bar, and a tape measure I needed for quite a bit less I had budgeted $125 and spent $100 so the extra $25 will go to the vacation savings!

Today was payday to I sent some money off the the evil CC's. I still have a long way to go for the big visa but I am at least paying more than the minimum. If all things go as planned it should be paid off by March of next year. I know some people may look at the two cards and wonder why I am not paying off the smaller card first. I know the concept of debt snow balling but the smaller card has a much lower interst rate so paying off the larger card makes more sense.
I normally put $240/mo in savings split between E-fund, A-fund, Car fund and Vacation fund. I have reduced that down to $140 so I could throw more money at the debt.
In other news, today we had a company picnic at work so I got dinner for free!

Well, I just now finally dipped my toes into the world of e-bay. I bought a Brahmin purse. Its gently used and I got it for $45. That may sound like a lot of money but these purses range from $185 to $400 retail so I feel good about the bargain.

The title says it all. Now I am not opposed to capri pants in theory. I am just tired of the fact that I need long pants for work and cannot find any long pants other than capris in the stores. I did finally find a pair of long khakis that looked halfway decent on me so I got them. they are a bit long but I can try to hem them. On the upside they were on sale. They were originally priced at 21.99 marked down from 38. When I got to the registar they rang up for 10.50 yea!

Ok so this is in no way financial but I am just curious to know what you think about Nuclear Power. I have definite opinions but I am curious to see other peoples opinion.
Do you see it as an asset to combat global warning, do you think the risks outwiegh the benefits, are you afraid of another chernobyl?
I welcome all thoughts!

Well today was the health fair--I am still alive and expected to still keep living for a while at least. Sine the blood work up was for fasting values I didnt have breakfast so I was able to save my breakfast money.
We also have two birthdays this week in our department so our supervisor bought lunch. I had brought my luch as I almost always do so there was no real money savings but I was able to save my lunch for tomorrow.
In the past few years I have inadvertantly planned my big vacations for May around my birthday so I decide to make that my vacation time on a regular basis. Most places I have ever wanted to go have good deals and good weather during May so it ends up being a great time to go. LAst year I went to Australia and had a fabulous time. Since I just started my new job in March of this year I really couldnt take any time off in May so this year will have to be a skip year. I did go to Orlando for a long weekend but it wasnt a long relaxing vacation. ANyway, so I am now trying to decide where I will go next May. I have thought of Iceland but the mre I look into it I think even with a good exchange rate it is still rather expensive. So now I am focusing on Alaska. Anybody have any ideas what to see and what can be missed. My list of places I want to go is quite long right now so I need to prioritize. I am hoping to travel around for about two weeks.

The plant I work at is pretty forward thinking when it comes to health. We have a gym on site which is $5 a month, they have regular health fairs and incentives for engaging in healthy programs.
Anyway we are having a mini health fair tommorrow and they are offering free blood work ups. Its free for employees and immediate family, contractors pay $40--still not bad.

As I mentioned in an earlier post I found the First NAtional Bank of Omaha online. The account is currently offering 6.00% interest until September.
So far I am having luke warm feelings. While the interest rate is good I dont feel like it has a very user friendly feel. Unlike ING you don't get a day by day running total of interest accrued. I really like that about ING. I have also gotten a few emails basically stating that they could suspend the account at anytime if any suspicious activity was suspected.
I also felt the sign up process was a bit bulky and I feel like it atkes too long to have money show up in the account.
I only have about $100 in the account and I may not add much too it. I have a feeling I will also be closing it after September.
The review is in no way a professional opinion, just mine.

I am still tweaking the colors on the blog. I wish there was a way to see the colors on the blog before updating and then having click back to the blog.
As I said in a previous entry I buy breakfast every morning at work. I have now decided to give myself a budget of $2.00 each morning. Whatever I don;t spend of that goes into my piggy bank (well actually my elephant bank but you get the idea)
I am toying around with the idea of the $20 challenge but I need to sit down and figure out how and what I want to add to it. When I see some people putting in coupon savings and such I pause. I use coupons too, but insead of putting that savings into an account I use the savings as a way to stretch my budget for a particular item. Is this just not a frugal way to think or is this a valid thought process. I guess it just depends on what each person is comfortable with and how one sees that savings. Any thoughts?

Well the power bill came today. It was lower than the last bill but it was due more to the fact that there were less days in the billing cycle than last time. I figured out the per day total and it was very close to last time. At least it was cheaper.
Today at work I didn't bring lunch. I wasn't feeling too well last night so I cam home form work and slept so I didn't prep anything for lunch. The money gods shined on me because some venders were set up in the training building and they brought lunch. SO free lunch!
The plant I work at has a cafeteria on site which is real convienient but can be bad on the wallet. I usually have breakfast there every morning. Breakfast is a good deal--1 egg white scrambled, 1 peice toast and milk for $1.44. I start work at 6:30am so I really need breakfast. I also look at it as a way to "bond" with my co-workers so I feel it is a worthwhile expense.
I had a bit of a weak moment last week--I ordered STARZ movie channels from Direct TV. I have a DVD recorder and I figure I will more than make up the money in recording movies instead of buying them. (I hate the whole rental thing--I never return them on time or don't feel like watching what I rented when I rented it--big waste of money for me)
